Carys is a junior at Rye Neck High School in New York! She is interested in coastal studies and wildlife conservation and hopes on pursuing these sub sciences as she gets older. She spent time volunteering at a wild rhino sanctuary last summer in South Africa where she was exposed to the troubling realities of poaching and political corruption in the country. Part of these activities include participating in a community outreach program teaching local Liswati community children English and mathematics. She enjoys exposing young students to science and recent pressing issues; she intends on volunteering at the same sanctuary this coming summer. She has also spent time volunteering through a land stewardship program with the Barnstable Land Trust where she became involved in environmental efforts on Cape Cod where she has spent many summers. Additionally, she spent time studying at the Woods Hole Oceanographic institute; conducting fieldwork, participating in labs, and daily lectures strengthened her understanding of prevalent marine issues, and provided her important leadership skills.
